Ever made a heavy chaal thinking your hand was unbeatable, only to see the opponent flip something higher? It happens to beginners all the time. Teen Patti uses just three cards, but understanding the hierarchy is what separates consistent players from people who bleed chips on every showdown.

1. Quick Hand Hierarchy Summary
If you need an immediate reference during live play, here is the order from strongest to weakest:
| Rank | Hand Name | Local Names | Top Example | Lowest Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Trail / Trio | Teen / Set | A-A-A | 2-2-2 |
| 2 | Pure Sequence | Pakki Rummy / Straight Flush | A-K-Q (same suit) | 4-3-2 (same suit) |
| 3 | Normal Sequence | Straight / Run | A-K-Q (mixed suits) | 4-3-2 (mixed suits) |
| 4 | Color | Flush / Rang | A-K-J (same suit) | 5-3-2 (same suit) |
| 5 | Pair | Jodi / Double | A-A-K | 2-2-3 |
| 6 | High Card | Muflis baseline | A-K-J (mixed suits) | 5-3-2 (mixed suits) |
2. Trail (Trio / Set / Three of a Kind)
A Trail consists of three cards of the exact same numerical rank. It is the absolute highest hand in standard Teen Patti.
- Best possible hand: A-A-A (Three Aces). Nothing beats three Aces.
- Second best: K-K-K, followed by Q-Q-Q, J-J-J, down to 2-2-2.
- Lowest Trail: 2-2-2 (Three Twos). Remember: even three Twos will comfortably crush a pure sequence of A-K-Q.
3. Pure Sequence (Straight Flush / Pakki Rummy)
A Pure Sequence consists of three consecutive cards belonging to the exact same suit.
- Highest Pure Sequence: A-K-Q (e.g., A♠ K♠ Q♠).
- Second Highest: A-2-3 (e.g., A♥ 2♥ 3♥). This is standard across almost all Indian cash apps. A-2-3 ranks higher than K-Q-J!
- Third Highest: K-Q-J.
- Lowest Pure Sequence: 4-3-2.
4. Normal Sequence (Straight / Run)
A Sequence (or normal run) has three consecutive cards, but they belong to two or three different suits.
- Highest Sequence: A-K-Q of mixed suits (e.g. A♠ K♥ Q♦).
- Second Highest: A-2-3 of mixed suits.
- Third Highest: K-Q-J of mixed suits.
- Lowest Sequence: 4-3-2 of mixed suits.
If two players both hold a normal sequence at the show, the player with the higher-ranked cards wins. If both players hold the exact same sequence rank (e.g., both hold J-10-9 in different suits), the hands tie because suits do not break ties in Teen Patti.
5. Color (Flush)
A Color hand consists of three cards of the same suit that are not in sequential order. If they were sequential, it would be a Pure Sequence.
- Highest Color: A-K-J of the same suit.
- Lowest Color: 5-3-2 of the same suit.
When two players compare Color hands, you compare the highest card first. If both players have an Ace, compare the second card (King). If those are also equal, compare the third card.
6. Pair (Double / Jodi)
A Pair consists of two cards of the same rank, plus any third unmatched card (the kicker).
- Highest Pair: A-A-K (Pair of Aces with King kicker).
- Lowest Pair: 2-2-3 (Pair of Twos with Three kicker).
When two players have the same pair (e.g. both hold two 10s), the player holding the higher third card (kicker) takes the entire pot.
7. High Card
If your three cards do not fit into any of the categories above—no pair, no same suit, and no sequence—your hand is evaluated simply by its highest card.
- Highest High Card hand: A-K-J (unsuited).
- Lowest High Card hand: 5-3-2 (unsuited). This is mathematically the absolute worst starting hand in Teen Patti.
8. The Math: Exact Odds of Being Dealt Each Hand
Out of a standard 52-card deck, there are exactly 22,100 unique 3-card combinations. Knowing the odds helps you understand why big hands demand aggressive play:
| Hand Ranking | Total Combinations | Mathematical Probability | Odds of Occurrence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trail (Trio) | 52 | 0.24% | 1 in 425 hands |
| Pure Sequence | 48 | 0.22% | 1 in 460 hands |
| Normal Sequence | 720 | 3.26% | 1 in 31 hands |
| Color (Flush) | 1,096 | 4.96% | 1 in 20 hands |
| Pair (Double) | 3,744 | 16.94% | 1 in 6 hands |
| High Card | 16,440 | 74.39% | 3 in every 4 hands |
